Sharing the voices of Tanzanian street children

Representatives from Caretakers of the Environment Tanzania attended an expert consultation at the UN in Geneva on the subject of street children, where they had the opportunity to share real life stories of street children in Tanzania. Planning work is now also underway for a National football challenge to take place in Tanzania. As well as football tournaments, there will be side events such as street dance competitions. The tournament will help select a team of street children to represent Tanzania at the Street Child World Cup taking place in Brazil in 2014.
Finally, a small group of children in Tanzania are taking part in a project where children across five continents are filmed talking about the issues that affect them. The film will become part of a short documentary, due to be screened in support of the International Day for Street Children on 12th April 2012.

CSC members based in Tanzania are busy at the moment: Arsenal football coaches have just arrived in Mwanza to train street children at the Caretakers of the Environment Tanzania centre, whilst Mkombozi have launched their Street Business toolkit about how street children can spend the grants they receive effectively to help them start their new business ventures.
With regard to National Strategy for Street Children, the government has approved the new law for children which includes street children and UNICEF has been given the task of developing and translating it. There are some few organisations who are involved but currently the government is lacking the funding to continue this work.
The Consortium for Street Children is supporting NGOs including Mkombozi and Caretakers of the Environment to deliver effective projects for street children and supporting their role in the development of the National Strategy.

On 12th April 2011 the Consortium for Street Children launched the first ever International Day for Street Children, which aims to put pressure on governments around the world so the rights of the estimated 100 million street children worldwide are realised. The International Day for Street Children was celebrated by CSC members around the world, with a special focus in Tanzania.
Working with NGO (and CSC member) Caretakers of the Environment Tanzania (COET), 381 children raised their voices (Louder Together) to the Mayor of Mwanza, Police and Mwanza Regional Government about their concerns and how they are treated while living on the streets. About 800 kids are still living on the streets of Mwanza city. There was also a lot of media coverage including interviews with CEOT Director Mutani Yangwe discussing why the International Day plays such a crucial role in raising awareness and coverage by STAR TV - looking at the issues facing street children in Mwanza City. There was a special emphasis placed on the struggles of street girls, who face rape and prostitution to survive.
NGO and member Mkombozi held events in Arusha and Moshi and invited government officials and the public. They also had coverage in local newspapers to raise awareness, playing a vital part in being Louder Together. Many thanks to both organisations! And a HUGE thanks to everyone supporting us.
