Thank You For All Your Support in 2012

This report is dedicated to all of you great people who have continued to support the vision of the Talia Agler Girls' Shelter (TAGS) in Nairobi, Kenya. The TAGS was dedicated to the loving memory of the wonderful Talia Agler by the Centre for Domestic Training and Development, following her death in January, 2012. We are very grateful to all of you for the support that you have continued to give us in the implementation of our project targeting trafficked and abused girls. As we reflect on the year that was, we wish to share with you the following highlights of 2012:

A total of 47 girls were rescued in 2012.
33 out of the 47 girls were reintegrated or reunited with family
6 girls have been placed in boarding schools (5 in primary school while 1 girl is in secondary school) so that they can continue with their education as their families are not able to support them
8 of the remaining girls are awaiting family tracing at the shelter while they benefit from inhouse counselling and basic education.

In 2013, CDTD wishes to reach out to more girls in need and offer them holistic care and protection. We are confident that with your support we shall reach at least 60 girl victims of trafficking and other abuses. Please feel encouraged as you give for every cent counts.

This year we look forward to raising more friends so please help us to get your friends involved so that we can assist most needy girls whose dreams have been shattered.

SUPPORT TRAFFICKED AND ABUSED GIRLS IN KENYA

This report documents updates from the Talia Agler Girls Shelter(TAGS) – A Girls shelter Based within Nairobi metropolitan which provides a safe and stable living environment, education, basic life skills training, health screening, referrals and assistance with family reunion or appropriate placement beyond the shelter to trafficked and abused girls.
Between September and November 30^th 2012, the TAGS benefited 17 girls aged between 11- 18 years old. Of these, 3 girls have babies – one born at the shelter and is adorable. During this period the following services were provided to rescued girls using funds from our supporters:

All 17 girls together with the 3 babies have received nutritional meals and supplements

Medical check-ups were provided to all the girls while medical treatment was offered to 10 of the girls. The babies all attend clinic at the community hospital.
All 17 girls have benefitted from professional counseling services some being offered by partner organizations
All the girls received basic needs and personal effects
3 girls were re-united with family after successful home visits were conducted to ensure that they could go back home. They will go back to school in January 2013 through TAGS support.
One workshop was held in the community to educate on child protection and how to safeguard the rights of children
2 girls are attending the local primary school pending re-union with family

According to the Shelter Manager demand for the services provided at TAGS is high, with the partners calling daily with new reports of underage girls being rescued from trafficking, physical abuse and rape. Unfortunately, the Shelter cannot take all of them in due to limited space and resources. But for those who enter the gates of the Shelter, it is a sanctuary, and the services provided offer a chance for rehabilitation and healing.
