Support Trafficked & Abused girls in Kenya

This report will focus on a recent visit to our project by the family of the late Talia Agler after whom the shelter is named.

In June we had the honor of having a visit from one of our greatest supporters and friends the Agler family. This is a family we value so much as the shelter was named after their late daughter Tali, a young woman who dedicated her life towards the transformation of others.  Armed with very little resources but with a very huge passion for others, Tali expanded the vision of CDTD beyond measure by reaching out to young domestic workers in Nairobi, Kenya in 2006.  In death as in life, Tali has not only been an inspiration to others but also to the girls at the shelter who will one day want to change the life of others like she did.

This is a visit that each one of us remembers and will remain in our minds and hearts for a long time.  Rabbi Agler was extraordinary in the way he handled topics i.e ethical choices that confront us as we fight with good or bad/right or wrong decisions that we make in the course of serving others.  Mindy was great as she shared on how to cope with stress and lift the burdens.  Some of the most encouraging words we learnt from the Aglers teachings include “Preserving to the end”, “focus until you achieve” and “it is not for you to complete the work neither are you free to abstain from it”.

The Aglers brought many gifts that have really changed our lives and brought smiles to our faces. From their generous contribution we have been able to buy 8 sewing machines and the girls have therefore started tailoring lessons. Girls received clothing, necklaces, play items, classroom materials and hair bands. The family together with the girls also helped make a new face to both the classrooms and the girl’s bedrooms by painting them with beautiful colours, the colors that Tali loved.

As we celebrate this visit please feel honored because YOU too have touched the lives of our girls. Always feel welcome to visit, share, and inspire the girls.

This is a progress report from Talia Agler Girls Shelter (TAGS), a safe haven for trafficked and abused girls in Kenya. From January 2013 to May 2013 the TAGS has benefited 33 girls and 21 of them being new cases. We have provided them with, literacy classes, home management skills, life skills, medical services, counseling, and formal education and where possible family reunion. We are very grateful for the support you have given these girls, which has enabled them to be empowered and in future be productive members of society.

Summary of girls assisted:

• We rescued 10 victims of Trafficking, 13 Sexual Abused, 6 Domestic Child labourers, and 4 Unaccompanied Refugee Minors.
• Out of these, the reintegrated were 5 victims of Trafficking, 3 Sexual Abused, 1 Domestic Child Labour, and 4 Unaccompanied Minors.
• The total number of reintegrated cases was 13.

In this report we wish to share with you the success story of one of our beneficiaries: Mary (not her real name)

”My name is Mary from Ethiopia, and I am 16 years old. I was brought to Kenya by a lady who promised me education, but I became a domestic laborer. My day started at 2:00 am to pick khat “miraa”, milk the cows and supply the milk to local hotels. The lady I lived with would beat me and call me names. When she went to visit her husband in another town, she locked me in the house for days until she returned. One day I decided to runaway and seek help in a neighbor’s house. Then the neighbor took me to the area chief. I stayed in the police cell for three weeks while I waited for assistance. I was then referred to Talia Agler Girls Shelter (TAGS). At TAGS I have been able to go to Bahati North Primary School, and I am performing very well in class seven. I am happy that I can achieve my dreams.”
