Putul's Journey Towards a Dignified Life

By PARVEEN CHOUDHURY | PROJECT MANAGER

Putul, a 35-year-old mother, lives with her family in a tiny single-room house in a slum near the canal side of Mir Meher Ali Lane in Kolkata. Their fragile home shelters five family members — Putul, her husband Feroz (40), their 14-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter.

Her husband works as a driver and earns barely around 95 USD per month, an amount far too little to meet the basic needs of the family. Most days were filled with anxiety about food, school expenses, medicines, rent, and clothing. Despite working long hours, Feroz’s income could not provide the children with a secure and healthy childhood.

Putul, being a homemaker with no source of income, often felt helpless watching her children compromise on their needs. There were days when she worried about whether there would be enough food for everyone at home. Buying new clothes for the children or arranging school materials became a luxury the family could rarely afford.

However, Putul refused to give up.

Determined to change her family’s future, she enrolled in a six-month tailoring training program supported by Tiljala SHED. For the first time in her life, she got an opportunity to learn a skill that could help her stand on her own feet.

After successfully completing the course, Putul was provided with a sewing machine. Holding the machine in her hands, she felt a new sense of hope and confidence. Today, she stitches clothes for people in her community from her small home and earns an income that supports the family.

Her earnings have brought visible changes to their lives. The children now receive better food, school supplies, and clothes. The family no longer feels completely dependent on a single income. Most importantly, Putul has regained her dignity and self-confidence as a woman who can contribute to her family’s wellbeing.

But like thousands of women living in vulnerable communities, Putul’s journey reminds us how a small opportunity can transform an entire family’s future.

Your support can help many more women like Putul receive livelihood training, sewing machines, and the chance to live with dignity. A single contribution can empower a mother to educate her children, provide nutritious meals, and break the cycle of poverty.

Together, we can help families move from survival to hope, stability, and self-reliance.
