The Young Leaders have now been participating to the coding club every Monday for more than three months and are really enjoying the adventure!
Most can now set up and operate their shiny new Raspberry PI’s, learning through Scratch how to create games with cute little animals. They were able to demonstrate their knowledge to one another, and supported each other to generate animated mice and cats. Such was the enthusiasm for learning that we decided to jump into looking at the code behind the graphics, moving on to learning the basics of Python: they used it to design text based pictures like Christmas trees with ASCII art, a graphic design technique.
More recently SYLA has begun new partnership talks promising exciting opportunities for this project: we met with the Brixton CoderDojo Club, who have now promoted our vacancies for tutors and have agreed to provide us additional instruction materials.
We have also advanced opportunities afforded us by Microsoft’s charity scheme and Salesforce. With Microsoft and the services of an IT technician from Claude Computing LTD, we have been able to upgrade our IT software. We hope to later use facilities in Microsoft SharePoint to enable the boys to have a webspace and presence.
GlobalGiving UK’s introduction to Salesforce has also meant that we are benefiting from SF charity scheme and expertise in using their technology. The more we develop our coding expertise as an organisation then the more we can customize our system.
SYLA are still looking for additional support staff to enable the boys to have occasional one-to-one tuition. Industry professionals are particularly sought to support us to build a tailored curriculum. Operational costs of the group are still a consideration we are looking at; we would like to enable more local children to benefit from SYLA’s coding club.
Thank you so much for your support so far, we could not have done all this without you.
We are now half way there and with your generous donations we will soon reach our goal: enabling 50 South London boys to learn programming, a fundamental skill for future leaders. Please keep supporting our project, and help the boys of SYLA become the leaders of the 21st Century!
