SYLA’s coding club has made extremely swift progress. So how then did we continue this trajectory of momentum as we entered a new academic year? Well, through your contributions we’ve been able to add a member of support staff to the club, which in turn allowed us the recruitment of learners (and equipment, too), and today the club celebrates a dozen new members. The growth spurt may not seem noteworthy, but the numbers have really given it a legitimate class feel, adding to a focused application from learners.
As for the club membership; the newbies are no less enthusiastic than the established learners we initially reported on. Especially nice is that with an additional member of staff, we’ve been able to differentiate the work to play to the different levels of ability and challenge. What doesn’t prove different, is a desire for what the club has to offer the learners though, so it was a challenge of our own to quench this thirst.
Consequently, since starting back we’ve taken something of a ‘relevant’ approach to learning in the Coding Club. With that in mind, from the get go leaners have been given the chance to build some great webpages, like the ones they use daily. Indeed, in accordance with levels, they’ve been as patient as they’ve been fervent, to pick up the vernacular of HTML, in the process learning what ‘tags’ were needed to make their pages more visually appealing. This approach has proven a great way to add competition, and creativity to the club, as learners vied for the best designs.
But the learning didn’t stop with the youngsters. With the benefit of some 18 months hindsight into the club now, we’ve learnt various ways to generate interest amongst learners. That’s why to kicked off the new year’s session, we invited a university student coder who has been working on a game. Despite it being far from the final product, the entire class were fascinated to first watch, and then try out the game in awe! Demanding to learn more, the learners got an understanding that this was all possible through taking their coding to the next level. Somehow, we think, they’ll accept the challenge…
All-in-all it’s been a great start back, and we’re determined to keep that same momentum up. Again, your generosity makes such impact, so please do continue to support. As we endeavour to keep the momentum going, we’re particularly keen to recruit a club teacher. Could this be you, or someone you know? Please let us know if so at info@syla.org.uk so that we can maintain the boys’ excitements!
