Summer Update

Our GROW Interns in Comitancillo!
Our GROW Interns in Comitancillo!

Dear Global Givers,

Hello! I hope you have all had wonderful summers! I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend a summer in Ithaca, and I’ve really enjoyed experiencing the warm weather here at Cornell (which is rare during the school year).

This summer, GlobeMed at Cornell sent our second GROW trip to Comitancillo to meet AMMID and continue our project of installing water filters. Our three interns spent four weeks in Guatemala, getting to know the local communities and learning more about how AMMID operates in the region. If you’re interested in reading more about their experience, read the blog posts written by GROW coordinator Lexie Burton here: https://grow.globemed.org/chapters/cornell/

We’re thrilled to announce that this year, we were able to raise our entire goal of $8,250, and more – our total funds raised in the 2014-2015 year was $8,470.45! This allowed us to install 157 water filters this summer, raising the total installed to 242. The excess funds went towards training local women (“promotores”) to maintain and clean the filters, providing them with essential jobs in their communities.

We are so grateful that we were able to accomplish our 2014-2015 year goals, and we would like to give a huge thanks to our Global Givers for your help in achieving our proposed funds. You make our mission possible through your compassion and generosity.

Last weekend, new internal co-president Kara Beckman and ghU coordinators Chen Shen and Madeline Maersk-Moller attended the 2015 GlobeMed Leadership Institute, an event run by the Global Headquarters to help the new eboard plan strategically for their next year. It was an amazing opportunity to interact with students from other chapters across the country, and gain some perspective on the success of their chapters. We left Chicago with dozens of ideas for this upcoming year, and we can’t wait to share them with you as we implement them. Here’s to continued improvement in the 2015-2016 year!

Classes start in just under a week, and as lovely as the summer has been here in Ithaca, we’re looking forward to having our eboard and general staff back on campus. We’re ready to get right back into the thick of things as the school year starts, so check back soon for new events and goals!

Thank you for your continued support!

Kara
