Summary

The project promotes menstrual health and hygiene in Uganda through education, training, and resource distribution. By teaching both adolescent girls and boys about menstruation, training girls to make reusable pads, and providing pads to those in need, it fosters understanding, reduces stigma, and ensures no child is disadvantaged in school due to lack of menstrual hygiene products. The project empowers girls, improves school attendance, promotes sustainability and equitable communities.

Challenge

In many poor Ugandan communities, 58% of women feel deep embarrassment during their periods, with 1 in 5 citing insensitive comments from male peers. For adolescent girls, the issue is worse; 40% miss school during menstruation, losing 4 to 7 days monthly. This disrupts education, causing missed lessons and academic gaps. The stigma, combined with limited access to menstrual products and knowledge, perpetuates gender inequality, leaving many girls struggling to reach their full potential.

Solution

Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) aims to foster understanding and support for menstrual hygiene by educating both adolescent girls and boys in underprivileged schools. Boys will learn how to support their peers during menstruation, while girls will gain comprehensive knowledge to manage their periods with confidence and dignity. TICO will train girls in making reusable sanitary pads, providing a sustainable solution and provide pads to those in need, ensuring no girl misses school.

Long-Term Impact

1. Improved Education: Reduces school absenteeism, leading to better attendance thusacademic performance, 2. Empowerment: Teaching girls to manage periods with dignity boosts confidence and reduces stigma. Educated boys become supportive allies. 3. Health: Reusable pads and good hygiene reduce infection risks. 4. Sustainability: Reusable pads cut waste and promote eco-friendly practices. 5. Community Well-being: Accessible menstrual hygiene promotes gender equality and healthier communities.
