LOOKING FOR THE INVISIBLE ONES

Hello dear GlobalGiving friends.

These last four months, APRAMP workers have developed a hard, important and intense work for all those who need us more than anyone. Let's talk about it!

As you all know, the global pandemic that we have been suffering for a year now has had a special impact on the women we work with. In the midst of this global upheaval, people who have always been invisible are once again left out: women and girls who are victims of trafficking, sexual exploitation and prostitution.

During the COVID-19 alarm period and forced confinement, the dynamics of the spaces where women were forced into prostitution changed significantly. Prostitution venues, clubs and premises were closed and women were forced to move to other places.

The confinement measures adopted in the first months, and the sanitary measures recommended after the end of the State of Alarm, are practically impossible to apply to this group. Because of their isolation and invisibility, and because they are forced to engage in sexual practices where social distancing and the use of masks are impossible to apply.

In general terms, the contexts of prostitution are more precarious and the users are in situations of maximum vulnerability, with higher debts, increased rental fees and areas of exercise.

During these months we have focused on providing comprehensive assistance to this group, which includes: social, health, legal, psychological, training, employment, housing, etc.

The work developed by the Mobile Unit has intensified, adapting at all times to the reality and needs of women, in terms of schedules or responses to the situations they raise.

Likewise, we have urged the competent authorities to implement the necessary measures and strategies, within the area of their competence. To this end, we have held coordination meetings with the people in charge of each Autonomous Community where APRAMP is present for the management and/or referral of housing resources.

In the same way, we have been especially focus in the media, denouncing the precarious situation in which the victims continue, the consequences in which the COVID-19 has derived for them, and showing the work that from APRAMP we manage to develop with their reinsertion through the jobs to which they have access here.

PROTECTING VICTIMS DURING THE EMERGENCY STATE

Let’s update the hardest last months.

As you know, the COVID-19 has terrible social, economic and health consequences. These consequences are even worse for victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Due to the COVID-19, our labour increase during these months. Our services as the Mobile Unit and the reception of calls to the 24 hours helpline has been intensified, because of the emergency situations that the victims of trafficking are living, and in our work we have prioritized the attention of basic needs and protection due to the increase of violence to which these women are exposed.

The main actions APRAMP developed were:

Strengthen coordination with law enforcement agencies, to report clubs and places where women continue to be exploited during confinement and receive people who endanger the health and integrity of women victims. Also, places where trafficked persons were detected and told us about their exploitative situation and their increasing debt.

To coordinate with other entities and NGOs, as well as with Social Services and Health Centres to cover their basic needs.

Our team has not stopped looking for "invisible areas" where the demand from the perpetrators has increased. This search has been done through women we were already working with, on websites, the women themselves who were moved to other places.

We have noted that women have been moved to more rural areas where there is less police presence to continue exploiting them. Others have been forced to move themselves or to receive "trusted clients". There has also been an increase in the use of the internet for exploitation by webcam, and payment by bank transfer.

APRAMP has focused on ensuring the right to information for victims through its 24-hour telephone and mobile unit, in order to be able to respond to urgent and extreme need situations. When necessary, the police have been informed to ensure the identification of victims.

FIGHTING AGAINST COVID-19

Hello, dear GlobalGiving’s friends! APRAMP is back to update you about our last four months.

We started March full of big enthusiasm and illusion, preparing an important event: a working table with the Royal House. Specifically, we had a work session led by Doña Letizia the Queen on March 6th, to keep adding and advancing in the fight against human trafficking.

We shared ideas, realities and the need and the importance of developing an unabridged law that supports our work against human trafficking.

Shortly afterwards, the crisis situation reached Spain as well and the alarm state was declared, and those weren’t good news for anyone but specially for the women and girls that we attend.

Our work during these months, specially with this situation, wasn’t easy at all. This situation has exposed once again the vulnerability of the women and girls that are human trafficking’s victims. They’ve been once again the most affected in rights, health, social and economical terms.

The demand from prostitution customer has never stopped, so because of the protective measures that made these clubs closed, these women have moved to even more invisible places where they hadn’t protective measures or self-isolation.

Also in this period, their situation has turned harder: they aren’t in any official record about people affected by the disease, due to their documentation lack they have difficulties to access to health services, their suffer more violence and their debt increase.

Therefore, our work during these months has continued trough telematic contact because of the access difficulties to the places where they’ve been exploited in such circumstances and we had focused on covering basic needs, as they have access difficulties to basic resources, specially in this health crisis.

These are some of the immediate and easy-to-see consequences of the Coronavirus in these women, without forgetting those that will come in medium/long term such as the prostitution return due to the work lack in sectors like tourism industry, commerce, domestic services or dependent people care.

That’s why APRAMP highlights again the importance of our work providing these women the necessary tools to quit prostitution and spiral of violence where they are involved. We won’t give up in accompanying, making visible, supporting and claiming.

Finally, show you another action we have developed during the quarantine. Some of our workers, human trafficking’s survivor, are making masks to donate it for public entities and others NGOs.
