Junior Cong is a 10 yr old Percheron draft gelding who came to us with chronic medical issues from a Michigan Humane Society after being seized from a neglect situation. Junior is an enormous draft horse who desperately needs surgery for his foot and his eye. Without treatment the foot pain could cause him eventually to have to be euthanized. It may also be possible to repair vision in his currently blind eye. The funds raised here will allow him to live with without pain and possibly see again.
Junior came to IGP blind in one eye and a severely painful back foot. After a radiograph by our Vet, his injury is a "sequestrum" (a fragment of dead bone detached from adjoining sound bone) in his hind foot and it needs to be removed with surgery. It is necessary to perform this procedure in a facility with the staff and equipment available to support his enormous size and weight. This surgery will eliminate chronic pain, continuous infections, and the possibility of euthanasia.
Junior Cong has a long life ahead of him. This surgery will relieve him from chronic pain for the rest of his life. With his huge size (almost 20 hands) and weight (approx. 2,400 pounds or more), it is necessary to relieve this foot pressure before the pain becomes too intense, which may lead to euthanasia. This will relieve him from recurring abscesses, lameness and chronic pain. It may also be possible to repair his eye and restore limited vision and further increasing his quality of life.
This surgery will save and extend Junior Cong's life, and possibly repair his vision. He will be able to live a life without pain and without a dependence on pain relieving medications. In addition, he will become our Ambassador here at the rescue. He will show for events to help Iron Gait educate youth groups and adults alike (the public) on the Percheron Draft Horses and the need to help these large breed horses from starvation, neglect, abuse and slaughter in our community and across the USA.
