Summary

Playa Patrol will create 6 game-based-learning activities in Spanish/English to educate children about the harm single-use plastic has on the sea. We plan to supply Mediterranean FUN FACTS to children under age 12 to change their relationship with plastic. Activities include Flash Cards, How Long It Lasts, Hidden Treasure, a Family Challenge, and more. Program rewards include a reusable water bottle and an Ocean Guardian certificate/medal for 150 students. Why not help #keepourseaplasticfree?

Challenge

Single-use plastic is a worldwide problem. Our coastal community has low levels of education and income (fishing/farming/seaside tourism) that makes it difficult for local families to change their relationship with plastic. Teachers, parents, local officials and businesses ask for our help to drive change. We believe that educating students via game-based learning tools in Spanish/English that also include Mediterranean/Spanish FACTS, is a fun and achievable way to make a positive change.

Solution

Teachers will be provided game-based learning tools (age 4-12) focused on the harm single-use plastic has on the sea. We provide actionable tools for students and their family members to change their day-to-day behaviours. In turn, they begin a dialogue within their larger community and become great Ocean Guardians: swap a plastic shopping bag for a reusable one; swap plastic water bottles for a reusable one; say no to plastic straws, etc. This is an example of positive peer pressure.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate and empower 150 students that live in Costa Tropical Spain, which is located along the Mediterranean Sea, to identify realistic and achievable ways to make a difference in their relationship with single-use plastic. Our local children will become Playa Patrol Ocean Guardians and work to #helpkeepourseaplasticfree.
