Care Beyond Barriers for Children in Malawi

By Elisa Cappai | Project Leader

Dear Donors,
the collaboration between Aleimar and Tiyende Pamodzi continues to bring support and care to children with disabilities in Malawi. Today, Tiyende Pamodzi manages 12 community physiotherapy centers located in areas with the highest concentration of people living with disabilities. The most common conditions among the children supported are cerebral palsy caused by birth complications and disabilities linked to malaria contracted by mothers during pregnancy.

Today, we would like to share with you the story of one of the children we support every day.
H. is an eight-year-old boy who lives with his family in a small rural
village of about 200 families where Christians and Muslims live side by side. He lives with his mother, father, three brothers and older sister. Both parents are farmers who cultivate maize, peanuts and soybeans, mainly for their own consumption, although they sometimes sell a small portion of their harvest at the local market.
The village has access to a water well, but the nearest physiotherapy center and health facility are located very far away. Reaching the nearest health center requires about two hours of walking, making access to healthcare extremely difficult for families already living in vulnerable conditions.

H. lives with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, for which he receives specific treatment. He cannot stand independently and uses a wheelchair. He is unable to walk, crawl or feed himself autonomously. Despite these challenges, his mother is deeply committed to his care. She has become a volunteer of Tiyende Pamodzi and has learned how to carry out physiotherapy exercises at home. Every day, with the help of H.’s older sister, she performs these exercises with dedication and patience. Thanks to this constant commitment, H. has made important progress. Today, he is able to hold up his head and can eat some solid foods, a significant improvement linked to stronger neck muscles and increased physical stability. Although he cannot attend school because of the isolation of the village and the long distances involved, H. responds positively to treatment, interacts with those around him and shows moments of joy and serenity when he feels safe and cared for.

Stories like H.’s remind us how essential community-based rehabilitation and family support are for children with disabilities living in remote areas of Malawi. Behind every small achievement there is the determination of families, the dedication of local volunteers and the possibility of accessing therapies that would otherwise remain unreachable.

Your trust and generosity allow us to continue reaching the most vulnerable families, guaranteeing care, support and opportunities to children living in extremely difficult conditions. Thanks to your precious support, children like H. can continue their journey toward a better quality of life and a more hopeful future.
