1. Project Overview

The Support Youths to Escape from Poverty (SYEP) initiative is a groundbreaking empowerment project by Mother of All Nations Foundation aimed at equipping underserved youth in Ghana with employable digital and entrepreneurial skills. The project seeks to transform community spaces into accessible tech hubs that provide training in coding, digital marketing, graphic design, data analysis, and IT support—bridging the gap between local talent and global opportunities.

SYEP aligns with MoANF’s mission of fostering inclusive development, promoting youth innovation, and driving sustainable economic transformation through education and technology.

2. Background and Rationale

A significant proportion of youth in low-income and marginalized Ghanaian communities face unemployment, poverty, and limited access to education or skill-building opportunities. The growing global digital economy offers potential for remote work and entrepreneurship, but these young people remain excluded due to:

  • Lack of access to computers and internet facilities
  • Inadequate digital literacy and technical skills
  • Limited mentorship and employment pathways

SYEP was designed to directly respond to these gaps by providing practical, community-based solutions.

3. Project Implementation Summary

Despite financial limitations, the project recorded notable progress in its early stages:

4. Challenges Faced

  1. Funding Shortage:
The most critical challenge was the lack of adequate financial resources to procure essential training materials (laptops, internet access, learning kits, and trainers’ stipends).
  2. Limited Infrastructure:
Although a venue was provided by the community, it lacked sufficient furniture, power supply extensions, and ICT equipment.
  3. Volunteer Retention:
Some volunteers initially engaged in the preparatory phase were unable to continue due to the delay in implementation.
  4. Sponsorship Withdrawal:
A potential local donor could not fulfill their pledge, affecting the project’s liquidity.

5. Outcomes and Achievements

While the project did not reach full implementation, it successfully:

  • Established a foundation for community-owned digital education in Madina Zongo.
  • Mobilized over 30 youths committed to participating in the digital skills training.
  • Strengthened community collaboration, as local leaders and residents supported the initiative voluntarily.
  • Produced structured training modules adaptable for future reactivation.

6. Lessons Learned

  • Community ownership enhances sustainability: The community’s willingness to provide space and mobilize participants shows strong local buy-in.
  • Early fundraising is essential: Resource mobilization must precede project launch to prevent delays.
  • Partnerships amplify impact: Collaborations with ICT firms, NGOs, and universities could provide technical support and resources.

7. Next Steps and Recommendations

  1. Resource Mobilization:
Renew fundraising efforts through GlobalGiving and local corporate partnerships to secure laptops, internet access, and training allowances.
  2. Phased Implementation:
Roll out the training in smaller cohorts using available facilities while gradually scaling up as funds permit.
  3. Partnership Development:
Engage private tech firms and government initiatives such as Ghana’s Digital Skills for Jobs Program for collaboration.
  4. Monitoring and Sustainability:
Establish a youth-led monitoring committee to oversee project continuity and ensure transparent reporting.

8. Conclusion

Although the SYEP project was halted due to funding constraints, it laid a solid foundation for a transformative youth development program in Madina Zongo. The enthusiasm from the community and participants underscores a strong desire for empowerment and self-reliance through digital skills.

Mother of All Nations Foundation remains committed to reviving and completing the project once adequate resources are mobilized, ensuring that young people are empowered to break the cycle of poverty and participate meaningfully in the global digital economy.
