Adolescent girls and young women in Uganda face discrimination and are at high risk of poverty, exploitation and high risk situations. Girls may be forced into early marriage, early pregnancy or survival sex. Forward it support vulnerable girls and young women in Uganda and offer counseling, training in life-skills, vocational skills and business to empower and equip girls to escape extreme poverty, secure an income and support themselves, their families and their communities.
Up to 80% of teenage Ugandan girls don't have the opportunity to attend secondary school exposing them to high-risk situations including child marriage, prostitution, abuse & extreme poverty. Forward it nurtures students to reach their potential through vocational skills training & counseling. Since 2016, over 98 girls have graduated, about 82% of whom earn above minimum wage through self-employment or employment and are able to support themselves and their families.
Our full training and counseling program works closely with girls to support them to overcome past traumas build confidence and self-esteem and develop the skills they need to gain employment, or be self-employed. Working with girls to become self-reliant breaks the inter generational cycle of poverty and means that these girls will never have to rely on hand-outs again. Not only will they be able to support themselves, they will be able to support their families too.
Forward it has the potential to enable many girls to gain financial independence, employ others, pay for siblings' education & improve living conditions for their families. These are all realities we can see amongst our current graduates.
