After the devastating earthquakes in Turkey, KEDV established 12 Women and Children Centers in affected areas. Thousands of women and children live in cramped, 21m container shelters, with little privacy, security, or access to basic services. These centers provide safe spaces where women receive psychosocial support, training, and economic opportunities, while children access early childhood education and care, fostering resilience and empowerment.
The Turkiye earthquake, one of the most devastating in the last century, struck 11 provinces, killing 50,000 people, destroying homes, and displacing thousands. Women and children were hit hardest, losing their incomes and safe spaces. They now live in overcrowded shelters, facing higher risks of violence, abuse, and heavy caregiving burdens. They urgently need safe spaces, psychosocial support, and economic opportunities to rebuild their lives.
Women and children center" is a model where low income women come together for empowerment and for their children to access early childhood education. It supports the Access of children from low income family to education and provide safe spaces for women to organize around their needs, such as access to basic services, trainings, activities etc. Model was developed by KEDV with a holistic approach as a solution to children's need for care and education and low income women's need for improving
Each Women and Children Center creates lasting change by providing early childhood education and care, ensuring children grow in a safe and supportive environment. Women gain economic and leadership opportunities, helping them achieve financial independence and long-term stability. Beyond services, the centers strengthen women's voices, empowering them to advocate for their rights and build resilient communities for the future.
