This project seeks to grant scholarships and provide support to 25 young people, annually, so that they can attend a university technician that allows them to develop professionally. The project joins forces with universities and allows young people who do not have economic access to these technicians to successfully complete them. Fundacion Accion Joven monitors these young people and provides necessary support so that they can successfully complete these professional development opportunities.
In Costa Rica, unemployment constitutes one of the main barriers for the integral development of the young people. The population between the ages of 15 and 24 face great difficulties to enter the labor market, with unemployment rates that affect a 23.2% of this segment of the population. This unemployment rate is particularly alarming when compared with the rate of general unemployment which reaches 9.6% of the national population (MIDEPLAN, 2018).
The project triangulates efforts with universities, to give study opportunities to young people from public schools, who are finishing their studies. These opportunities are achieved thanks to the financial support of donors, who help cover the costs of education, relocation and technological support provided to the young participants. The Foundation seeks to be a bridge between vulnerable youth and development opportunities, being a guide and support for the young person who is in this process.
The main gaps of the young people to access the labor market are related to shortages in life skills, low schooling, low access to technical and complementary education, ignorance of the labor market and formal elements linked to access to job opportunities and lack of basic resources to be transported among others. Providing an opportunity for professional development, the chance for access to decent employment is expanded, generating human development.
