335 VICTIMS OF WAR CRISIS RECEIVE MEDICAL SERVICE

By Ainemukama Prosper | PROJECT LEADER

Decades of war, violence, and poverty have claimed the lives of over five million people in Congo. Militant inspired insecurity has also destroyed a number of hospitals and schools in the area. It is impossible to verify exact figures on the number of violations committed against children, including kidnappings, because of persistent insecurity and lack of access to the eastern part of Congo.

At least 35,000 children have taken refuge in camps, including more than 600 who were separated from their parents. absence of schools, health care, and reliable income-generating opportunities hinder communities’ ability to emerge from the now eternal crisis. We thank GlobalGiving platform and our partners to help us reach the vulnerable populations.

Despite overwhelming odds, there is hope across eastern Congo today. Communities are working together to create economic opportunities, and leaders from around the world are working in partnership with the people of the DRC for a new future for the region which entails health services for all. Last month, Kigezi Healthcare Foundation provided free medical services to the vulnerable in eastern Congo and they included free HIV testing, other STI testing, general medical services and ante natal care services. This was a stitch in time as one beneficiary reported,"I have been sick for a long time waiting for complications of the disease to kill me but now I am as happy as a child as the doctors have treated me." The people that were registered totaled up to 335 with women at 196, men at 70, and 69 were children.  We still have poor health seeking behavior across many low income countries.

The children were given deworm neglected tropical diseases  and taken through games such as rope skipping, ball games, snakes and ladders so as to mitigate the effects of PTSD due to the conflict. Our plea to everyone is that more resources should be pooled and ferried to these vulnerable people.
