Kigezi Healthcare Foundation(KIHEFO) was able to engage over 50 religious leaders in a dialogue to host internally displaced people from war zones in eastern part of Congo. This dialogue meetings took place in the town of Aru that is in the Ituri Province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Aru town is in the northern part of Ituri province that is relatively free of violence associated with the unending civil wars that is ravaging continuously the southern part of the province. Hosting displaced people within DRC minimizes the continuous influx of refugees into the  neighbouring countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Each time people move, they become more vulnerable. Large numbers have fled into neighbouring Uganda, which, as of April 2024, hosts about 1.62 million refugees and asylum seekers from DR Congo and elsewhere. Once in Uganda, Congolese people escaping violence are granted refugee status. The crisis in DR Congo has resulted in the internal displacement of 7.2 million people (March 2024), making it the second largest internal displacement crisis on the African continent. Since the beginning of 2024, more than 738,000 people have been newly displaced in DR Congo.

Internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) face many challenges. These include having limited access to food, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. They also live in harsh conditions, such as makeshift shelters or camps.  More so, IDPs especially women, are often victims of sexual assault and rape. Children who have dropped out of school are at risk of being recruited by armed groups or forced into child labor.  DPs and host communities are weakened by cyclical and multiple displacements.  With all the above, the security situation remains volatile, with civilians facing theft, burglary, abuse, and harassment.
