WITNESS makes it possible for anyone, anywhere to use video and technology to protect and defend human rights. We provide training, tools, and support to people around the world so that they can use video ethically and effectively to create positive change. We support activists working on issues from gender-based violence to war crimes to police brutality, and give them the tools to influence and pass on skills to their activist networks.
With mobile devices in the hands of millions, more and more footage exposing human rights abuses is captured everyday. But many of these videos that people risk their lives to record may never be seen because they are unverifiable, lack context, are difficult to locate among the sea of content, and are susceptible to being taken down.
WITNESS teaches and produces materials on the ABCs of civic witnessing including: filming techniques; safety tactics; capturing video to be used as evidence; archiving footage and more. The organization also advocates to technology companies for policies and functionalities on their platforms that will better serve the needs of activists. With these strengthened skills and tech tools, activists can produce and share changemaking footage safely and effectively.
By 2018, WITNESS' resources will reach over 500,000 activists - providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to create impactful videos that have the ability to create lasting human rights change.
