Last year Giving Tuesday was a record breaker, raising over $168 million for charitable organizations worldwide. Global Giving, host of our Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program, knows the importance of this day. That's why, this Giving Tuesday Global Giving is offering rewards to all organizations and all donors ALL DAY LONG!

The Giving Tuesday Campaign starts at 12:01am EST and ends at 23:59 pm EST on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017.

These are the Giving Tuesday prizes that Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program can share in:

  • There will be a $75,000 Incentive Fund we will share in depending on how much we raise.
  • There will be 14 Bonus prizes up for grabs for most dollars raised and most donors donating.
  • New recurring donations up to $200 started on Giving Tuesday will receive a 100% Match.

UPO's Foster Grandparents Program operates at 48 locations in the District of Columbia and includes early education centers, public and charter schools, before and after-school programs, as well as youth programs. Each year, more than 200 Foster Grandparents (FGPs) put in more than 175,000 volunteer service hours – working one-on-one or in small groups. FGPs serve where the need is the greatest and because of this, our youth receive tremendous academic benefits alongside life-changing personal development. The program is funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). The funds raised by Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program helps us to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for more than 200 low-income DC senior volunteer FGPs. These expenses are not covered by CNCS. In addition we have a waiting list of 100 seniors to be FGPs, 10 educational institutions seeking to join the program and every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional FGPs. The funding we receive from CNCS covers the cost of our current program. Any expansion will have to be funded from private sector fundraising.

Dear loyal supporters, we are so grateful for your support! You have helped UPO raise $2,441 during the past eighteen months to help Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program.

United Planning Organization’s 2016 Annual Report was recently distributed. We are proud to share the Foster Grandparents Program Report in the attached PDF, which highlights this quality program’s achievements and outcomes during the past year.

The Program is sponsored by UPO and funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). We are truly grateful for your past support, but to be honest our fundraising achievement for Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program on GlobalGiving until a week ago has been disappointing.

This past week we have witnessed a miracle. Five generous gifts from new donors totaling $491 increased our total fundraising to-date by 77% to $1,125 from 18 gifts.

We are soon entering the giving season, Giving Tuesday is early this year on November 28, which is 5 weeks away. Help us get an early start with our year end fundraising by making your own gifts and sharing this Report with as many relatives and friends. Our Foster Grandparents and the kids they serve deserve the support

Today, youth make up 16% of the world’s population, the largest ever in history. Children around the world experience extreme poverty.

Children in Washington DC make up 21% of the Districts population, 26% of DC’s youth experience poverty.

There were 36,707 children living in poverty in Washington DC in 2015 according to an ACS Census.

More than 15,000 socioeconomically disadvantaged DC children at 60 volunteer sites including Early Head Start/Head Start centers, Elementary Schools and Children’s Hospitals, receive over 180,000 volunteer hours of service annually from dedicated UPO Foster Grandparents (UPO FGPs)

  • The children receive tutoring, mentoring, social emotional support and are assisted in learning programs by UPO FGPs in cooperation with school systems.
  • The children derive the benefit of verified outcomes of improved school readiness and K-12 success.
  • The children are given a warm mix of academic acumen, nurturing and much needed attention by their UPO FGPs, which these low-income children so richly deserve.
  • The children are the beneficiaries of UPO’s mission to Unite People with Opportunities thanks to the generosity of volunteer UPO FGPs.

Youth continue to act as community leaders and peacemakers. Hear some of the accolades about how much they enjoy their work from two of UPO’s Foster Grandparent Superstars:

“As part of UPO’s Foster Grandparent program, I’m a volunteer at Malcom X Elementary School. I help classroom teachers with the daily lessons and I read to the children. I haven’t missed a day since I started years ago. I love going every day to hear the children say “Mama, help me with my work.” It’s overwhelming. Sometimes I get so full I want to cry. But I’m just happy that I’m able to do something and give something back to our children.” see attached picture

“UPO has given me an opportunity to work with young people. And, since working with UPO’s Foster Grandparents, I have worked with DC youth from different parts of the city. I enjoy what I do. UPO offers many locations to volunteer as a Foster Grandparent. I like my location. I’m at Job Corps. My role gives me the opportunity to give something back to the youth.” see attached picture

Every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional Foster Grandparents and 10 additional educational institutions are seeking to join the UPO Foster Grandparents program. UPO has a waiting list of 100 seniors applying to be Foster Grand Parents and desperately needs additional funding to meet the demand.

We sincerely thank you for your generous donations to-date, however we need substantially expanded support to reach our Goal of $11,500. Please help our program grow! Please help our Foster Grandparent volunteers and the children that they serve! You can do so with the click of a button by sharing this report with your friends and family by email and on Social Media.

United Planning Organization’s Foster Grandparent program was honored by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser during the Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National and Community Service. This program is an opportunity for seniors to give back by sharing their experience and wisdom with children who value and cherish the lessons. Several months ago more than 5,000 women gathered in DC for the United State of Women Summit! The day-long event, held at the Convention Center, was followed by a Day or Service which offered UPO’s Foster Grandparents an opportunity to participate at Excel Academy Public Charter School.

Alongside Summit attendees, the UPO Foster Grandparents prepared summer enrichment backpacks and helped the students create vision boards based on the Summit’s pillars. Students in grades 3 – 7 were provided with two summer reading books from the academy’s suggested reading list, art project materials and a special note from First Lady Michelle Obama! Next, students in grades 5 – 7 participated in a vision board mentoring activity. Attendees of the Summit engaged the students in conversation on topics discussed at the Summit. After the attendees shared lessons from the Summit, the students created vision boards to display how the topics applied to them and shared lessons they wanted to remember. Summit pillars discussed included: Economic Empowerment, Educational Opportunity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health and Wellness and Leadership and Civic Engagement. See attached photos of Women Summit activities.

UPO’s mission is to Unite People with Opportunities. UPO's Foster Grandparents program provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for persons aged 55 and older to engage in daily activities and provide services to children from birth to 21 years of age, to support them on their path to become self- sufficient members of the community. Annually UPO Foster Grandparents provide more than 150,000 volunteer hours serving more than 15,000 socioeconomically disadvantaged children.

Ten additional educational institutions are seeking to join the UPO Foster Grandparents program. Furthermore every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional Foster Grandparents. UPO has a waiting list of 100 seniors applying to be Foster Grand Parents. Additional funding is needed to meet the demand. Thank you for your support to-date. We need substantially expanded support to reach our Goal of $11,500. You have demonstrated that you care. Please help by sharing this report with your friends by email and on Social Media.
