Youth Week Campaign 2018 - Monday August 6th – Sunday August 12th

Twenty-six percent of DC's youth experience poverty! UPO's Foster Grandparent volunteers serve more than 15,000 children from low-income families. The children receive tutoring, mentoring, and emotional support from our dedicated volunteers, at Early Head Start/Head Start centers, Elementary Schools and Children's Hospitals throughout the District.

You can contribute to these children getting the nurturing attention, they so richly deserve. This is the perfect opportunity to double your impact.

$15 - Will provide a summer uniform for one Foster Grandparent

$25 - Will provide a week of transportation for one Foster Grandparent

$50 - Will provide 40 hours of training for five new Foster Grandparents

UPO’s Foster Grandparent Program trains low-income seniors with caring spirits to provide attention, guidance, and support to DC children in a variety of local settings, including early education centers, elementary schools, hospitals, and youth programs. Volunteering as a Foster Grandparent (FGP) is the perfect opportunity for individuals aged 55 and older to share their experience and wisdom with children who will cherish the lessons to be learned. Help is needed to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for more than 200 low-income DC senior volunteer FGPs. In addition we have a waiting list of 100 seniors to be FGPs, 10 educational institutions seeking to join the program and every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional FGPs.

Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program has set a GOAL to raise an additional $1,070 during the next few weeks to provide a weekly stipend for 10 additional FGP’s in an effort to support the urgent need for more FGP’s to provide critical mentoring and tutoring services daily to DC children from birth to 21 years of age in a variety of local settings.

GlobalGiving Rewards Bonus Day tomorrow, Thursday July 18, will provide us with a great opportunity to meet our GOAL.

Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program! Our Superstar Ranking with GlobalGiving, earned with your support, will enable us to receive a 50% Match for each dollar we raise on GlobalGiving Rewards Bonus Day tomorrow, Thursday July 18.

Thank you, dear loyal friends, for your generous support of Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program. Your support has helped to ensure that we always have sufficient funds to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for more than 200 low-income DC senior volunteer FGPs. Here’s how we can raise $1,070 in 15 hours on Thursday July 18 to provide a weekly stipend for 10 additional FGP’s in an effort to support the urgent need for more FGP’s to provide critical mentoring and tutoring services daily to DC children!

To date 42 donations have been made to Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program. If each one of us makes an additional donation of at least $17 to Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program tomorrow, Thursday July 18, we will raise $714. If all our donations qualify for 50% matching funds we have the possibility of raising $1,071, which will provide the total needed to reach our GOAL.

The start time is 9:00:01 EDT on July 18. That is when the $120,000 in one-time matching funds will become available. Please make your donation as early as possible in the day to ensure that your donation is matched!

UPO’s Foster Grandparent  (FGP) Program trains low-income Washington DC seniors to provide critical mentoring and emotional support to District children in a variety of local settings. The program provides fulfilling volunteer service opportunities for seniors 55 years and older giving them an opportunity to give back by sharing their experience and wisdom with children who value and cherish the lessons. This program operates at 48 locations in the District of Columbia and includes early education centers, public and charter schools, before and after-school programs, youth programs and hospitals. Each year, more than 200 Foster Grandparents put in more than 175,000 volunteer service hours – working one-on-one or in small groups mentoring more than 15,000 DC children. Foster Grandparents serve where the need is the greatest and because of this, our youth receive tremendous academic benefits alongside life-changing personal development.

The Foster Grandparent Program is sponsored by UPO and funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service Senior Corps (CNCS). CNCS is a Federal Government Program that provides grants to organizations committed to strengthening their communities through volunteer programs. However increasing pressure on the US Congress to reduce the burgeoning national debt by cutting budgets for entitlement programs has intensified the importance of growing fundraising for FGP from the private sector. Private foundation funding has increased in recent years and will continue to grow to replace government funding.

The funds raised by Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program helps us to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for more than 200 low-income DC senior volunteer FGPs. These expenses are not covered by CNCS. We have a waiting list of more than 100 seniors volunteering to be FGPs, 10 educational institutions seeking to join the program and many current partner sites that have requested additional FGPs. Any expansion of the FGP program will have to be funded from private sector fundraising.

Funding for Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program had a slow start but the past four months we have experienced a dramatic increase in support for the project! See the attached joyous gathering of Foster Grandparents.

As explained above this project is funding an important part of the FGP program budget. We are extremely grateful for the 35 donations we have received to-date totaling $2,855 and ask for your continued support. Please also help us by spreading the word about the work of our dedicated FGP’s and the kids they serve by email to your friends and family and on social media.
