“I’m legally blind but I’ve learned to use the computer. I’m proud to do it. I feel comfortable and grasp more as I go.”
- Beverly Massey, a UPO Foster Grandparent for 6 years who nurtures children at UPO’s Frederick Douglass Early Childhood Education Center
Grandma Massey is extraordinary and determined. She uses her new computer skills for early education and for her everyday needs.
She adores helping our youngest students learn: “I love the children — they want to sit on my lap all at one time! I look forward to every day with them.”
Grandma Massey is also one of our senior volunteers who participated in the White House Easter Egg Roll this week!
UPO’s involvement is now a tradition. Last year, our team helped children navigate the Rose Garden during the Easter Egg Roll, especially children with special needs. Then the White House staff invited our Foster Grandparents to return… not just to offer thanks but also to get our seniors’ advice on how to improve inclusion in federal programs for children, seniors, and others. Our Foster Grandparents’ wisdom led to a spirited discussion that has sparked ongoing engagement with the White House.
