Dear Supporters,
June was a special month in East Indonesia, and we are grateful to share some highlights with you.
Last June, the school yard of SD GMIT Pukadale was filled with hundreds of children running, laughing, and reading together. They were not there because they had to read. They were there because they had something to celebrate: the Literacy Festival.
A Journey That Started Years Ago
Since 2021, Yayasan Tunas Aksara has been working alongside schools in Kupang Regency with one simple belief: every child deserves the opportunity to learn well, and every teacher deserves the support to make that possible.
Through our Timor Suka Membaca programme, we continue to support teachers through coaching and mentoring because we know that lasting change takes time. Teachers need ongoing encouragement as they put the Saya Suka Membaca (SSM) curriculum into practice in their classrooms. And over the years, we have seen encouraging change. Teachers who once lacked confidence are now leading engaging reading lessons, and children who once struggled to read are becoming confident readers. These may seem like small steps, but we believe they are important stepping stones in each child's educational journey.
A Day Full of Joy
On 12 June, more than 540 people gathered at SD GMIT Pukadale. Children, teachers, school leaders, local government representatives, researchers from Monash University Australia, and many other partners came together with one shared purpose: celebrating literacy.
Throughout the day, children took part in reading competitions and literacy games. They built words, played reading games based on the SSM curriculum, coloured posters, and explored books brought by the district's mobile library. Every activity encouraged children to discover that reading can be enjoyable.
One of the most beautiful moments during the day was during ‘Silent Reading Time’. For a few minutes, hundreds of children, teachers, and guests sat together in silence, each reading a book of their own choice. The busy school yard became still, with only the sound of turning pages.
The Literacy Festival was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate how far we have come. But it is not the end of the journey. There are still many schools across East Nusa Tenggara where teachers need support, and many children are still waiting for the opportunity to become confident readers. Together with the local government, and with your continued support, we hope to train more teachers, reach more schools, and give many more children the opportunity to discover the joy of reading.
Thank you for walking alongside us on this journey!
