Summary

This the economic resilience of refugee women in DRC, will involve them in livelihood activities such as Handcraft, small business, learning a life-skill and helping them to access loan opportunities. This will therefore expand their protection space especially that they do not benefit assistance from Humanitarian Organizations which have completely forgotten about these vulnerable refugee women, it will help to reduce dependence on relief and become self-reliant and overcome poverty.

Challenge

Refugee women and young girls are most vulnerable people in communities as they do not have livelihood opportunities, cannot own land, and they are highly excluded and discriminated. Because also of the language barrier and have been affected by wars in DRC, they are too poor, many are victims of all forms of sexual abuses, others in order to survive resorted to commercial sex while others are just sexual slaves. They continue to be victims of all kinds of sexual transmitted diseases and HIV.

Solution

We have developed a Refugee Women Economic Model which aims at empowering them. It is about putting them in a group of 25 and discover what they can do together individually or as a group, we give them the necessary to start the business and the supervise them. Each week they have a saving meeting among themselves, the savings help to solve their social problems and provide loans among themselves to boost their businesses. And this makes them economically independent as they improve lives.

Long-Term Impact

This project seeks to create a safe protection space, rebuild their lives, earn their living and empower refugee women economically in order to make them able to respond positively to their basic needs, it also helps them to participate in community development, they can also focus on other community issues through strong leadership roles, access education to refugee women and also ensure that their children are protected and have access to education in their communities.
