Kenya Closing Statement

By Sophie Birkett | Head of Operations

Dear Supporter,

It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the closing of GVI projects in Shimoni, Kenya at the end of 2014.  After 9 very fulfilling years of sustainable volunteer programs ranging from conservation, education, health, construction and sustainable community development it was a very hard decision for GVI to make.

The decision to close was made after a prolonged period of low volunteer numbers and therefore extremely low levels of funding available. With almost no volunteer interest for 2015 we are forced to end operations after over 6 months of almost no new bookings.

Through 9 years at the Shimoni hub, we have focused upon capacity building for our local partners and communities and the skills, training and services that GVI volunteers and staff have provided have prepared them to be independently carry most of the projects forward.

GVI will continue to keep contacts with local partners and provide support as possible to assist them with the transition period, through advice, monitoring and fundraising through the GVI Charitable Trust. We have established a  longterm management plan for Mombasa partners which being a younger project, is further away from sustainability, and for Shimoni we will be rounded up results and recommendations via publications and reports.

We would like to thank all of the Kenyan community members, partners, national scholars, GVI volunteers and staff that have made this impact possible over the years.

All the best
