RESPITE CARE FOR 100 HIV+ CHILDREN IN NAIROBI

Joel (not real name) was eleven years old when the world finally slowed down long enough to see him.

Born into a home filled with hardship instead of safety, his life began with challenges that would have bent even the strongest spirits. He was born HIV positive, lived with cerebral palsy, convulsive disorder, and physical deformities in both knees that made walking painful and uncertain. His body carried many burdens, and his young mind had known fear far too early. Abandoned by the very person meant to protect him, Joel endured neglect and abuse, left behind as though his life did not matter.

But the world did not forget him.

One day, caring neighbors noticed that something was terribly wrong. Joel was weak, injured, and fading. They rushed him to the hospital, and in that moment, his life took a turn. The medical team listened—not only to his injuries, but to his story. His mother, overwhelmed by hardship, confessed the struggles at home. For Joel’s safety, the hospital made a crucial decision: he would not be sent back.

Instead, the Children’s Department stepped in, and Joel was placed in Nyumbani children’s home—a place not just of shelter, but of healing.

When Joel arrived, he was severely malnourished, his immunity dangerously low, and his body fragile from illness. Yet, despite everything, he was remarkably talkative. He spoke openly about his past, not with bitterness, but with a child’s honest voice. Anyone who met him could see he was a special-needs child—but even more clearly, they could see his spirit.

Care came to Joel from all directions. Doctors, nurses, counselors, nutritionists, and caregivers worked together, rebuilding what hardship had taken away. Medical reviews revealed another hidden challenge: sickle cell anemia. Treatment began immediately. A neurologist helped control his convulsions with regular medication. An orthopedic surgeon examined his legs and made a life-changing decision—corrective surgery was possible.

The surgery was successful.

Today, Joel is in recovery, waiting for his next orthopedic review, learning each day what it means to hope with his whole heart. He has gained weight, his immunity has improved, and his viral load is now undetectable because of consistent treatment. His convulsions are under control. His body, once so fragile, is growing stronger.

But the most powerful change is not only in his health—it is in his joy.

Joel is a jovial boy who fills home with laughter. He tells jokes, makes others smile, and dreams boldly. He talks about playing football, riding a bicycle, and going to school. He believes that once his legs are strong, nothing will stop him. His optimism shines brighter than any diagnosis ever could.

Joel’s story is not just about survival. It is about what happens when compassion meets action—when communities, professionals, and donors come together to protect a child’s right to live, to heal, and to dream.

Today, Joel is standing on the edge of a new beginning.

Maria’s Second Spring: A Bloom Of Hope

Consider Maria, a seven-year-old who came to Nyumbani Children’s Home after years of living in an unsafe and unstable environment. Her father struggled with alcoholism and violence, and her mother, overwhelmed and unemployed, could not meet the needs of her four children. While her siblings had already been placed in alternative care, Maria’s case was especially urgent because she was the only child living with HIV, and her health was rapidly deteriorating. Seeing her condition, the local children’s officer referred her to Nyumbani’s Respite Care Center for immediate support.

When she arrived, Maria weighed just 12 kilograms. She could not walk due to rickets, had a persistent cough, and had spent most of her young life in and out of hospital. A medical assessment revealed HIV, tuberculosis, severe anaemia, and later sickle cell anaemia. These conditions required careful treatment and close monitoring.

With consistent nutrition, medication, and dedicated care from our clinical team, Maria slowly began to recover. She regained strength, took her first steps again, and eventually joined pre-primary school. Today, she is healthier, more confident, and discovering the joy of learning and play. Her transformation reflects the impact of timely intervention and your support.
