From Silent to Smiling: Baby Hope's Recovery

Since our last update, all 100 children in this program have continued receiving therapeutic feeding, ARV treatment, and clinical monitoring through Nyumbani's respite care center, part of Nyumbani Children's Home.

Baby Hope arrived at Nyumbani as a one-year-old, severely malnourished and unable to stand or walk. Her family had been going through a difficult period, and as things grew harder at home, she went without the nourishment she needed. A partner organization already working with her family became aware of her condition and asked Nyumbani to admit her temporarily, with a simple goal: restore her health while helping her mother rebuild her strength, emotionally and economically.

When Hope arrived at the home, she was withdrawn, fragile, and sick. But with consistent care, nourishing food, and medical treatment, her body slowly responded: her appetite returned, the anemia was treated, her bones grew stronger, and day by day she gained weight, until she began to smile. "When she first arrived, she was very quiet and had little energy," recalls the house mother who cared for her daily. "Watching her gradually become more active, curious, and playful has been one of the most rewarding parts of our work. Today she fills the house with laughter and enjoys playing with the other children."

Hope has since returned home, healthy and thriving, and her mother, supported through psychosocial care, now runs a small vegetable business to provide for her family.

Stories like Hope's are only possible because of consistent nutrition, medical care, and monitoring for every child in our home. On July 15th, GlobalGiving's July Bonus Day gives you a chance to multiply your impact: donations of $100 or more made within the 24-hour campaign window help unlock a share of GlobalGiving's $150,000 Incentive Fund for Nyumbani Children's Home.
