REPORT ON MEDICAL MISSION-MAY 2015 CAPE COAST
The First Intervention Ghana aim is to serve a key component of our rural healthcare system and to provide the highest quality rapid response medical care services in addition to community development programmes for sustainable human development. The medical mission project is in phases and this was the first phase as we extend the second and the third phase to other needed places in Ghana.
The goal for the mission-2015 is to assist more than 700 people including kids and aged to access quality healthcare and make preventive healthcare practices known to them.
First Intervention Ghana with financial assistances from Buck Taylor Family-USA however continued to provide its general health outreach to rural communities. The First Intervention Ghana aim is to serve a key component of our rural healthcare system and to provide the highest quality rapid response medical care services in addition to community development programmes for sustainable human development.
Reducing ill-health and administering quality healthcare compliment First Intervention Ghana’s strategy to implement the effort of promoting preventive healthcare activities for the vulnerable and deprived people in the Central Region of Ghana.
With regards to its strategy, two mission programmes were instituted namely Remote Area Medical Mission and Mission Ghana (Eye-care Screening).
The Rural Area Medical Mission and Mission Ghana programme contributes to our strategic objective of facilitating improvements in the health status of the deprived areas, with a focus on women, aged and children. First Intervention Ghana undertakes key healthcare activities that promote the health of our target communities, protect them from infectious diseases and offer basic health care services for their ailments.
This is expected to increase the life expectancy, reduce infant mortality, and improve maternal health of our target communities and thereby enabling them to overcome the fears that drive them into bondage.
The dominate objective of the programme is to reduce ill-health through a programme of intervention in health education.
Having deprived communities in Central Region and other parts of the country as our operation areas, the Medical Mission Team screened this time kids from Play Soccer International at FIFA Football for hope center together with their families and inhabitants of surrounding communities in Cape Coast.
The community based healthcare programme recorded a remarkable number of patronages in all communities visited and combined: wound dressing, blood pressure monitoring, eye vision screening, consulting and medication, blood sugar testing and health talk on selected health issue. Again, the medical team continues to extend the mission to Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem District, farming district communities in Central Region of Ghana. The team stationed in the Bronyibima town and screened four surrounding communities.
STATISTICS
The female patients were twice as many as the men, 67% versus 33%. Of the women 56% were adults while almost 70% of the men were adults. About half of the patients were older than 40 years while 32% were under eighteen years of age.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
From the onset, the team anticipated huge patronage in the morning after a day before radio announcement on Live Fm. The patronage rather increased towards the late afternoon during the screening. The team was able screened about 400 patients till the medicine stock run very low in Cape Coast. The patients were screened and given medication to their ailments. In the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem District communities, the team screened about 1800 inhabitants.
CHALLENGES
The major challenges encountered during the mission have to do with the following:
• Mobility- transportation to and fro of the medical team to the area was compelled the team members made use services of public transport which intend delay their arrival on time.
• Logistics- unavailability of medical equipment was a hindrance to the smooth running of the mission work.
SUCCESS STORIES
The mission was made possible with financial assistance from Taylor Family all from USA. The passionate family supported First Intervention Ghana appeal on Global Giving website with an amount $6000.00(USD)
In all, the team screened about 2200 people and distributed free spectacles as well in conjunction with Partner from Sweden.
Through the consultations, we realized that, only handful of the beneficiaries were having National Health Insurance Access Card. Those without card expressed their gratitude to the organizers of the said event for the free consultation and medications. A 54 year old man us that ‘this is my first time of testing my blood sugar level’’. The team also educated the people on the need to prevent cholera.
APPRECIATION
We wish to extend our heartfelt appreciations to all individuals and organization who in kind have contributed to the achievement of the operations of First Intervention Ghana up-to this far. There were many challenges during the mission but they were not impediment to our operations. Our greatest appreciations go to the Taylor Family-USA.
We again extend our gratefulness to ICS-Lattitude Global Volunteering for volunteers support, and Play Soccer Ghana for granting First Intervention Ghana access to their play ground for the mission and not forgetting Live Fm, our Volunteer Nurses and the Global Giving for making available to us their platform to raise funds.
