Computer literacy for underserved youth in Delhi

Career Clarity Session by Abhishek

Hello, Everyone! Wish you a very Happy New Year. My name is Savita and I have been associated with Udayan Care for 3 years now. In December 2015 I enrolled myself in one of the Udayan Care IT center in Vinod Nagar (East Delhi) with an objective to learn basic computer skills so that I could become employable.

Udayan Care IT center is a unique programme where with the support of donors and mentors like you, young girls and boys coming from economically weak background get the basic education in computers at subsidized rates. By learning basic courses, and professional courses like Tally, Photoshop etc. we get trained to become independent self-reliant and employable. Today, I am working as a graphic designer in a publishing house drawing a good salary and am able to contribute to support my family.

This is the 25th year of Udayan Care, and IT Centre celebrated it on 4th November 2018, by calling for the very first “Grand Alumni Meet” in order to bring together the Alumni’s of IT Centre under one roof. The meet was attended by 250 alumni, Udayan care staff and our esteemed donors like you. I got a chance to meet all my batch mates and was amazed at how well they have grown professionally. The meet was inaugurated by the lightening of lamp by Kiran (founder & managing trustee - Udayan Care), Manju (CSR head – Microsoft) and Harsh from Social Venture Partners (SVP) which was followed by a play and a ramp walk. We all got a chance to share our success story and gratitude towards all our supporters who have been instrumental in bringing about this change in our lives. It was a day of Reward, a day of Recognition and a day of Reunion.

On one hand conversations with my fellow batch mates took me to the memory lane while on the other hand conversation with the existing IT student Yogesh reminded me of the workshops and sessions we used to have to polish our own skills. Yogesh shared a bit about how helpful the session was which he recently attended on ‘career clarity’ by Abhishek (careers coach) at one of the IT Centres where he is currently pursuing his diploma. The session was to guide them about how they can choose the right kind of career for themselves to grow in their professional lives and helped them to understand the difference between passion, quality, and hobby. It was very evident that this workshop really helped him to understand to make clear choices about his career. I saw a huge difference in his personality in a years’ time, from a shy and indecisive person he has grown into an extrovert and a confident person. Today after meeting him I realized how these workshops really help you to shape your own thoughts and to get clear directions. Today he knows what he wants to do in his life and has become really vocal and expressive about his thoughts.

I will always be thankful for the support I have received from my mentors at the IT center at each step of my career. A special Thanks to my donors who have supported this initiative taken by Udayan Care, to support young people like me who have the will to achieve something in life but due to the lack of resources failed to do so.
