Project Report | May 8, 2020
May 7, 2020 Report

By Pamela Standing | Executive Director

We are well into Month Two of our remote reality as we continue to stay in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

MNIBA is committed to the wellbeing and livelihoods of Native businesses. We are working hard to bring resources and services to our communities.  We received two small grants and have been able to offer supports. We know that by working cooperatively and collectively together we can find new ways of transitioning from a face-to-face economy to a virtual trade and exchange economy that works for our Native businesses, artisans, and Native growers/producers.

We continue to be amazed, humbled and proud of the response of our Indigenous communities to this unprecedented situation. With our communities facing severe shortages, our leadership and communitiy are providing supports, food and meals to its citizens. We say Wopida – Chi Miigwech to all the first responders, health providers and those people working in essential jobs who put themselves at risk. A group of chefs, sous chefs, and volunteers are feeding our native elders and those vulnerable in the Minneapolis area, which will now include St. Paul. We see families working together to make masks for others in need.  We are connected through our Cultural Lifeways as we navigate and work together for the wellbeing of our families and communities.

We recently gave out small $100 grants for supplies to artists and were so pleased with the many artists who chose to Buy Native and support small native businesses with their orders for beads, fabrics and other materials.  We are also working with a group of young high school students who have graduated from MIGIZI Communications' social media and marketing program, and they will be developing a series of 15 and 30 second psa's about social distancing from an Indigenous lens, they are also developig a series of graphic posters with COVID-19 messaging that speaks to our communities.  We have been able to help support several entrepreneurs and an artist collective with their website expenses.  We are also doing a series of interviews with native entreprenuers, musicians and artists for a national and international live-stream event to get the "Buy Native" message infront of a greater audience.

We also have begun work with language speakers to get our Buy Native primer developed and grounded in our Cultural Lifeways and language.

Both of our planned events for a Buy Native conference and rollout have been cancelled and we will are waiting for time that it will be safe to gather again.

We have attached our 2019 Impact Report!

Wopida - Miigwech - Thank You for your ongoing support!
