Playing For Change Foundation's Music Music Institute in Nepal is one of our biggest programs, with over 50 students attending free music classes each week. The demographic skews a bit older here - most of these students are in their teens to early twenties. Recently a number of bands have formed out of the program, which is great, because it shows that our older students are able to take what they learn in PFCF schools and apply it to their home life too!
Another exciting development was the recent delivery of an iPad Pro and tripod to Musica, thanks to a generous donor. Our goal was to teach the instructors how to use the devices for more effective and engaging storytelling, so we can keep our supporters informed of the struggles these young people face and how music continues to provide them with an outlet for creativity, inspiration, and learning.
Our students in Nepal were incredibly excited, but confused. They had never seen this kind of technology before - it was really fun to watch the reaction on their faces! We began to record their performances and look back at them in order to see and learn from mistakes. As an artist, it is a very powerful tool to be able to see your past performances and learn from them - it also raises self esteem.
There is tremendous potential here, and we have so much work to do. The kids are so excited to hear that there are people around the world wanting to see their performances. They are thrilled to see that someone cares enough to listen to them. They want to show our supporters the results of their hard work.
PFCF Director of Asian Programs, William Aura, plans to return sometime in August or September to conduct further training that will enable the kids to film their own content, and tell their own stories. We will keep you updated!
