Centuries of cultural repression have endangered Maya language and traditions. Many Q'eqchi' youth in 44 remote villages lack access to bilingual, culturally relevant education. Without your support, ancestral knowledge and identity risk being lost. Funding will revitalize Maya cultural education, reaching 2,700 students through storytelling, language instruction, and traditional practices that strengthen community pride and intergenerational continuity, ensuring the survival of Maya culture.
Maya communities face the rapid loss of language, traditional knowledge, and cultural practices due to centuries of marginalization, limited educational resources, and pressures of globalization. Without support for cultural education and revitalization, these living traditions risk disappearing, weakening community identity and connection to ancestral values that have sustained the Maya people for generations.
This project offers bilingual Q'eqchi'-Spanish education to strengthen cultural identity and pride among Maya youth. It is developing a Maya Cultural Center where Spiritual Guides share oral narratives and teach customs, rituals, and worldview. The program also integrates Maya cultural education into school curricula and produces bilingual volumes of Maya legends collected 50 years ago. These efforts preserve ancestral knowledge, revitalize language, and ensure the continuity of Maya heritage.
The long-term impact of this project is the revitalization and continuity of Maya culture as a living, dynamic force in community life. By preserving the Q'eqchi' language, traditional knowledge, and spiritual practices, future generations will grow with a strong sense of identity and pride. The Maya Cultural Center will become a lasting space for cultural transmission, strengthening community cohesion, promoting intercultural understanding, and ensuring sustainable development for the future.
