María, age 12, is in 6th grade in Chajul. She has been attending the library since she was in 3rd grade. She loves to read books, and do her homework when she visits the library, but most of all she enjoys listening to story hour with her peers.
The library has helped María deepen her reading skills, advance in her classes, and get extra support with her homework. It has been a safe and welcoming space for her to participate in additional classes, including STEM lessons taught by our librarians, and it is always a pleasant space to relax and dive into a new book.
The majority of the parents of the youth we work with in Chajul never completed elementary school, and many families do not speak Spanish at home. The library serves as a place where our young learners can be tutored, get help with their schoolwork, and have access to Spanish language support.
After her time in the Saber Sin Límites (Limitless Knowledge) Community Library, María is motivated to continue her education in middle school, and is applying to be part of our second class of 7th graders in Colegio Horizontes for the 2023 school year. We love to see María and her peers so excited about their futures and eager to learn and grow!
We are also excited to share with you that our project was chosen from a pool of 5,000+ projects from around the world as the September GlobalGiving Project of the Month! We are grateful to the 3,000 donors who make donations each month towards the Project of the Month, and we are honored to receive this recognition and additional financial support! We are thrilled to be able to invest this additional support to ensure that youth like María have high quality literacy and learning opportunities which help them work towards a future filled with educational and professional opportunities.
