Beyond the Floods: Quiet Work, Lasting Impact

By Monica Verma | Manager

Thanks to your unwavering support, the story of Kaziranga’s wildlife doesn’t pause when the floodwaters recede — it continues to be written every single day. While the world sees the dramatic rescues only during the monsoon, you make possible the quieter, often unseen work that happens now — the careful preparation, the long-term care, and the steady progress that ensures we are always ready to protect vulnerable animals when the waters rise again.

While the floodwaters have long receded, our work at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) never slows down. In this quieter season, we focus on preparedness — ensuring that when floods return, our response is faster, wider-reaching, and saves more lives.

With your support this quarter, we have:

  • Strengthened frontline readiness: conducted refresher training for rescue staff and forest department responders, focusing on safe animal handling and rapid response.

  • Upgraded equipment: repaired rescue vehicles, stocked emergency veterinary kits, and serviced transport cages — all critical for swift rescue operations in submerged terrain.

  • Enhanced monitoring systems: continued to track previously rescued rhinos, elephants, and deer, with encouraging updates of their successful adaptation in the wild.

At the same time, several animals, including rhino and elephant calves, rescued during past floods are still under our care. A young rhino calf, for example, continues to thrive at CWRC, steadily gaining strength under round-the-clock veterinary attention. Such long-term rehabilitation would not be possible without donor support, and every day brings this calf, and others, closer to their eventual return to the wild.

These steps may be less visible than dramatic rescues, but they are the foundation of our flood response capacity. Every life we save during the next floods will be possible because of the preparation happening now.

Your donations have not only supported animals still under care but have also bridged critical gaps in readiness. As we gear up for the next flood season, we remain deeply grateful for your trust and commitment to keeping Kaziranga’s wildlife #ForeverWild.

Warm regards,

Monica (Team WTI)
