Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!
We have some wonderful updates to share with you from Kaziranga! Thanks to your generous support, our team at CWRC has been able to rescue, rehabilitate, and care for orphaned elephant calves affected by this year's floods.
Among our newest rescues are Hojai and Deopani, two spirited young male calves, both around 1–1.5 years old. When they first arrived, they were weak, scared, and in desperate need of care. But today, they are thriving—full of energy, curiosity, and an insatiable appetite for milk!
Hojai, the more mischievous of the two, loves his morning play sessions, often seen chasing birds or trying to climb on logs (not very successfully yet, but he’s determined!). Deopani, on the other hand, is a little more cautious, always following his caretakers with an inquisitive look, as if he’s trying to understand every move they make.
These two are now part of a larger herd of nine other calves undergoing rehabilitation at CWRC. Together, they are forming strong social bonds, just like they would in the wild. They spend their days playing, wrestling, and learning essential survival skills. Their absolute favorite time of the day? Daily walks in the Panbari Reserve Forest! These guided walks help them get used to their natural habitat, strengthening their legs, senses, and instincts for the journey back to the wild.
Every step they take towards recovery is thanks to you. Your kindness is helping them heal, grow, and one day, return to the forests where they truly belong.
As someone who has already done so much, we can’t thank you enough. In these critical times, every bit of support makes a difference. From March 25th-28th, GlobalGiving is running a special matching campaign, where every donation up to $50 gets a 50% match while funds remain—helping us stretch every dollar further for the elephants. If you'd be willing to spread the word to your friends and family, they too can join this beautiful cause and help build legacies in the wild with WTI.
We’ll keep you posted on their progress, but for now, know that you’ve made a real difference in their lives. Thank you for standing with us—and with them.
With gratitude,
Team WTI
