Project Report | Dec 20, 2022
Sparrow nest box installation for happy chirrups

By Monica Verma | Project Leader

Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!

We hope you are doing great!

With this email we are sharing updates for our project titled 'Help us keep wildlife forever wild'. We are so honoured and grateful for your support as you chose to donate for our project among so many wonderful causes out there. Thank you so much for believing in our work.

In 2017, a group of local volunteers observed a significant drop in the sparrow population of Karnal district in Haryana. Only 4-5 individuals were all that were left at that time.

Loss of habitat and lack of availability of suitable places for sparrows to build nests was hypothesised as a major cause for the decline in their population. To bring back the numbers, the team designed nest boxes made of wood and feeders made of recycled plastic and installed 400 such set ups in the Goriya Enclave locality of the district. The efforts yielded results, and today there are over 1000 sparrows in the area.

Through your support in the reporting period, we sanctioned a Rapid Action Project for the volunteer group to expand the efforts to other locations in the district. The team installed 300 nests boxes in Sham Nagar locality. Within a few days of installation, these nests were occupied by sparrows!

The next step of the project is to install 50 feeders near the nest boxes. The team is also working to publish a book that documents the success of this methodology on sparrow conservation and hopes the same can be replicated in other parts of the country. The team is also creating awareness and lobbying support from the government as well as the local authorities for protecting the species. We are hopeful that this support will safeguard the population of sparrows in the area over the years.

That's all for today's updates. We will soon be back with more reports of the work we do. Until then take care, and thank you so much once again for your kind support.

Warm regards,

Team WTI
