Dear friend,
Hope you have been keeping well!
We are glad to share with you the updates for the project ‘Help us keep wildlife forever wild’. Thank you so much for supporting this project and for your generous donation to the appeal on GlobalGiving platform.
Today’s updates are about a rescued elephant calf, called Bokhonto, who is currently being hand-raised at Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh. With your support, we provided a month’s supply of milk to feed Bokhanto.
The elephant calf was rescued from a human settlement in Pasighat town, where it was held captive by the locals. Immediately after the rescue, the calf was handed over to Itanagar zoo for preliminary treatment and care. The calf was under severe stress and had sustained moderate injuries. After the preliminary treatment, it was transferred to Pakke Tiger reserve for further care. He has been provided utmost care and has been under constant observation.
Rescued as a month-old calf at the peak of the pandemic, Bokhonto has now been under care for almost a year. It is fed 22 litres of milk a day and has begun foraging trips with the caretaker. It will soon be introduced to an adult captive elephant, Kumki, to encourage socialisation so that it can learn foraging and other behaviours from the adults.
Once again, thank you so much for your generous support to Bokhanto. We will be soon back with more updates. Till then, take care!
With regards,
Team WTI
