The Hub is the only project on Kos providing basic needs and integration outside the Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC); combining emergency relief (food, hygiene) with integration pathways (language, job placement, administrative support). The Hub is a community-driven space, that our refugee community actively shapes. It is a humanitarian lifeline and an integration incubator, bridging gaps left by State services. Beyond immediate needs, it promotes social inclusion and empowerment.
Hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers arrive on Kos each month; met with unsanitary camp conditions, scarce resources, and little chance to rebuild their lives. With no access to work, limited information, and few opportunities for integration, people are left in limbo. Struggling to meet their basic needs while facing deep uncertainty about their future. To address these urgent needs, Glocal Roots offers essential support and safe spaces that help people navigate this difficult transition.
Our Free Shop provides people on the move with essential items such as clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and food. Our Hub functions as a community centre, a welcoming space where people can rest, take part in activities such as sewing, handcrafting, or board games, and join in language classes. With a strong focus on fostering self-reliance, our help desk supports refugees in navigating administrative formalities and accessing job opportunities in Greece.
The Hub pursues two main goals which aim to address the long-term needs of our community: 1. Refugees on Kos are well-informed and have access to available support structures 2. Refugees on Kos have greater capacity to engage in present and future opportunities Through workshops and language classes, our community develops new skills that support integration into society. This not only enhances individual opportunities but also fosters long-term social change and stronger community cohesion.
