Happy 2016!
Thank you for your continued support of Project Streetwork and your strong commitment to assisting homeless youth in New York City. This has been a busy year for us! Over the past few months, we hosted a number of events for our young clients including Thanksgiving and holiday celebrations, sponsored by our corporate partners as well as individual supporters and volunteers. We had food, gifts, music, and a lot of laughs. In addition, clients received packages of donated toiletries, personal care items, as well as new winter clothes.
A positive new development has been the recent attention paid to New York’s homeless youth population by local media and government, highlighted by Mayor de Blasio’s new plan to add 300 shelter beds for homeless young people over the next three years. A recent New York Times' article, Homeless Young People of New York, Overlooked and Underserved, featured Project Streetwork staff and clients, and documented the challenges of serving such a hard to reach population.
In other news, we completed an internal review of our services for 2015. Last year, program staff made 20,686 client contacts at our two Drop-In Centers. On average, we provided assistance to 114 homeless or shelter insecure youth every day, offering services ranging from food assistance and access to laundry facilities, to intensive case management and connection to permanent housing options. All of this would not be possible without the help of dedicated supporters like you. We thank you for strong commitment to homeless youth in New York City and look forward to continuing to update you on our progress throughout the year.
