Summary

The mental health of young people needs more support than ever before with the ongoing environment brought on by COVID-19. This project aims to train 60 crisis lifeline support workers over the next 12 months, to provide more support during the 2021 Olympics, and to ensure that awareness of these resources are reaching the youth that need help, in a medium that works for them. Be a part of saving lives and making the future possible for struggling youth in Japan.

Challenge

Suicides rates for young people were on the rise before COVID, despite decreasing rates for the rest of the population. With the challenges of COVID,youth are most vulnerable. For young people, having the ability to send text messages to the chat service in a medium they prefer is crucial. Japan is the only G-7 country where suicide is the leading manner of death. Help TELL change that by getting much-needed mental health resources to the young people in Japan who need them, right now.

Solution

This project aims to train 60 crisis lifeline support workers over the next 12 months, to provide more support during the 2021 Olympics, and to ensure that these resources are reaching the young people that need help. Studies have shown that suicide can be prevented when a person has someone who will listen to them. We are seeking to expand our online chat service hours to reach more young people in distress. To do this we need more volunteers.

Long-Term Impact

In Japan, more people died from suicide in October than from COVID in all of 2020. Japan, and the world, is facing unprecedented challenges to maintaining mental health, and studies show that there has already been, and will continue to be, a significant increase in mental health issues, directly impacting young people, as a result of COVID. Your donation will help change lives by allowing more young people in crisis to access support when they need it, from the Lifeline and the Chat.
