Support for women survivorsof sexual violence

Women and girls in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continue to face the devastating consequences of sexual and gender-based violence. In Goma and surrounding communities, survivors often live with physical injuries, psychological trauma, stigma, social isolation, and severe economic hardship. Many struggle to access specialized medical care, psychosocial support, education, or opportunities to rebuild their livelihoods. Our project, Support for Women Survivors of Sexual Violence, was created to respond to these needs through a holistic approach that places survivors’ dignity, safety, recovery, and independence at the center of our work.

At this stage, the project is in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are identifying qualified trainers and potential learners who will participate in vocational, literacy, empowerment, and income-generating activities. The project has a total budget of US$34,345, and US$45 has already been raised through our collaboration with GlobalGiving. Although this first contribution is modest compared with the resources required, it represents an important beginning and, most importantly, a sign that people around the world believe survivors deserve a second chance. With continued support through GlobalGiving, we are confident that we can mobilize the resources needed to move from preparation to full implementation.

Once sufficient resources are secured, the project will provide survivors with access to specialized medical care, psychosocial and therapeutic support, vocational training, literacy opportunities, income-generating activities, and social reintegration assistance. Particular attention will be given to young girls and vulnerable women through coaching and mentoring designed to restore confidence, dignity, leadership, and participation in community life. The expected impact goes beyond immediate assistance: we want survivors to regain control over their lives, become economically independent, understand and defend their rights, and be recognized once again as valued members of their communities. Every contribution can help turn recovery into opportunity.
