Many playgrounds were lost in Tohoku region because of the tsunami damage or the temporary houses built afterwards. Then, we deliver outdoor play opportunity to the temporal houses area, open spaces, or somewhere like this around there, by means of play kitchen car called Sammy. We create an opportunity for children to gather and for the parents or the residents to communicate with each other.
Play has power to make intergenerational connections as well. There are elder men started to help us from this year in the temporary house which we come to. Though they were not used to contact with children in the beginning, they looked happy when they were asked about how to use the carpenter’s tools. It is heart-warming to see them making something together or talking while sitting at the table together.
In another playground, an elder man, who does volunteer work for traffic safe, has got to come often. One day, when children played baseball, he got in and played with them. He said “I played baseball as well, in the past”, and he looked so happy.
