This project aims to fill in the gap of provision of comprehensive care for cancer patients and their loved ones. Its aim is to ensure an easy access to psychosocial support and verified information for families that struggle with a family member's cancer through help of psychologists, social workers and other professionals. The project focuses on multidisciplinary cooperation of professionals, volunteers and a patient organisation Amelie providing help for cancer patients and their close ones.
In cancer outpatient care in the Czech Republic, the treatment of most cancer patients, the access to psychosocial support is minimal. The waiting times for psychologists can be over three months long and social workers in hospitals attend to outpatient clinics only exceptionally. However, research studies show that comprehensive help and support in cancer has demonstrable effects on the treatment effectiveness, the quality of life and survival of cancer patients, stressing its vital importance.
Amelie's aim is for cancer patients and their loved ones to receive professional, timely and targeted help that will aid their adaptation to the situation, help them accept permanent changes or support them to maintain the highest possible quality of life in all phases of cancer treatment and in their life with cancer. The Centres support those affected by cancer, cooperate with hospitals, volunteers and represent the interests of cancer patients as the only organization in the Czech Republic.
Achieving the aim would ensure the sustainability of services and their regional distribution by Amelie Centres. This would have a positively impact hundreds of families dealing with a family member's cancer. This professional support can help to reduce acute distress as well as, in the long term, help make fundamental changes and improve quality of lives, provided that the patient or their loved one adapt to the situation and receive information and help they need in a good timely manner.
