Summary

On January 20th, Trump signed an executive order stopping work of all USAID spending, which includes the project making up more than 50% of CFI's social work budget. This breaks the agreement that USAID had with CFI, causing us to have to break the promises we had made to the children, families, and community. This means that, without warning, CFI lost the money we had to support families, particularly those relying on emergency cash and food support.

Challenge

Because of the executive order to stop USAID funding, 235 children and their families in CFI's Social Work program were immediately put at risk of not having their basic needs met. We have children with disabilities unable to continue their therapy, parents whose children will go hungry because they cannot afford food, a young man studying engineering who won't be able to afford his university costs, and a baby abandoned with his grandmother who urgently needs formula, just to name a few.

Solution

This funding will fill the gap caused by the withdrawal of vital aid from the United States in CFI's Social Work program. This program has spent 15 years working to improve the lives of children suffering from extreme poverty, child labor, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, trafficking, neglect and unsafe migration in rural Cambodia. The funding requested will go directly to support families with cash and food support and maintain the six social workers dedicated to improving the community.

Long-Term Impact

Since funding was withdrawn without warning, CFI social workers were unable to prepare families to manage their difficult situations alone. This funding is vital to helping families make a plan to improve their situation so that they can get back on their feet and help themselves to have a better future. Even if USAID funds are reinstated, all donations will go towards our social work projects that help the most vulnerable families be safe and live with dignity.
