Support Victims of Missile Strikes in Ukraine

In the final days of August, Ukraine faced an unprecedented escalation of aerial attacks. Russia has stepped up its use of combined drone and missile strikes, with some attacks lasting for hours. In Kyiv alone, air raid alerts sound up to 15 times in a single day, with the total time residents spend under alert sometimes exceeding 15 hours.

What is especially worrying is not only the intensity of these attacks, but also the way they are changing. More and more often, warehouses, logistics centers, and other infrastructure that keep communities supplied are coming under attack. These sites play a crucial role in delivering food, medicines, and other essential goods.

In recent weeks alone, logistics and warehouse facilities operated by some of Ukraine's largest supermarket chains and delivery service providers have been damaged or destroyed. Attacks on these facilities disrupt supply chains and make it harder for people to access basic necessities.

The potential humanitarian impact of these attacks is particularly concerning. They may point to an attempt to disrupt the supply of food and essential goods for civilians ahead of the winter season. Some supermarket chains have already reported shortages of certain products, and as winter approaches, these disruptions could become an additional challenge for millions of people across the country.

Since the beginning of the year, our response teams have been deployed to emergency sites more than 2,100 times, providing assistance in the wake of shelling, missile strikes and other emergencies across Ukraine.

But the Ukrainian Red Cross is not only responding directly at the sites of attacks by providing first aid and supporting the evacuation of those affected. As an officially mandated partner of the government in emergency response, we are also preparing for the potential humanitarian consequences of these attacks and working to ensure that the most vulnerable people are not left without support if conditions worsen. If needed, we provide food parcels, hygiene kits, clean water, and other essential humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
