Beyond Education - Caring for Children's Health

By Retno Hapsari | General Manager

The health and well-being of children are just as important as their education. This month, XSProject focused on helping children understand the importance of staying healthy and taking care of themselves.

XSProject works together with Puskesmas (Community Health Center), a government healthcare facility that provides basic health services and education to the local community. Every few months, health center staff visit the children to provide health education and conduct general health checks.

During this month's visit, the children learned about worm infections, how they can occur, and how to prevent them. They learned that walking barefoot, especially when playing outdoors on contaminated soil, can increase the risk of certain worm infections. Simple habits, such as wearing shoes and washing their hands regularly, can help protect them from these infections.

XSProject also works with a local hospital to provide health education for the children. During a recent visit, a doctor taught them about the importance of brushing their teeth and maintaining good oral hygiene. Each child also received a toothbrush and toothpaste to encourage them to practice what they had learned at home.

The dental check-up results showed that almost half of the children examined had common dental problems, including tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Frequent consumption of sweets and poor oral hygiene were identified as possible contributing factors. These findings remind us how important it is to teach children good dental care habits from an early age.

The eye examinations also revealed that many children had common vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Early detection is important so that children can receive appropriate care and any vision problems can be addressed before they affect their learning.

This program was meant only for our kindergarten class, but understand the important of this health program, we added all the Primary Students. Total of 60 students – almost 2/3 of the total students have all dental and eyes problems.

These visits have helped us understand more clearly that supporting children means more than ensuring they can attend school. Good health is essential for their growth, development, and ability to learn.

We would like to thank our donors for making these health activities possible. With their continued support, XSProject can help children access not only education but also the health care and knowledge they need to grow and thrive.

Education and health have always been two of our main priorities. We believe that healthy children who have access to education will have a better chance of building a brighter future.
