Support Community Health Workers in Rural Area

We are pleased to inform you that, as of December 20, 2024, the Ministry of Health of Rwanda declared the official end of the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak. Following two full incubation periods without any new confirmed cases, the outbreak, which began on September 27, 2024, was officially declared over. By December 19, 2024, there had been 66 confirmed cases, 15 deaths, and 51 recoveries, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 23%. While the outbreak has ended, there remains a risk of re-emergence due to viral persistence in recovered patients' body fluids and the potential animal reservoir. Ongoing vigilance, early case detection, and continued community engagement are crucial.

In response to the outbreak and to better prepare for future health threats, we are implementing a capacity-building initiative for Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Rulindo District. This initiative will provide comprehensive training on infection prevention and control (IPC), as well as practical simulations to equip CHWs with the necessary skills to manage infectious disease outbreaks. Essential supplies, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), will also be distributed to protect both health workers and the community.

We aim to train approximately 4,000 CHWs, enhancing their ability to prevent and respond to future health crises. This project is vital for improving community resilience and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

As reported by the Rwandan Minister of Health, eight individuals have tragically died from the recent outbreak of the Marburg virus, with most victims being healthcare workers. This outbreak, confirmed on September 27, 2024, has already identified 26 cases, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced infection control measures. Marburg, a highly lethal virus with a fatality rate of up to 88%, highlights the vulnerability of health systems and the critical role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in combating infectious diseases.

This initiative aims to bolster the capacity of CHWs in Rulindo District through comprehensive training and essential supplies. By focusing on infection prevention and control, technical training on emerging infectious diseases, and practical simulation sessions, we aim to equip CHWs with the skills and resources needed to effectively respond to current and future health threats.

Goals and Impact

Our goal is to train and supply approximately 3,000 CHWs in the Rulindo District. By strengthening their capabilities, we can enhance health education, promote effective disease prevention, and ultimately save lives. This initiative not only addresses the immediate challenges posed by the Marburg outbreak but also prepares our health workforce for future infectious disease threats.
