Memory cooked on three stones her whole life. In Kamwendo that meant smoke in the kitchen, red eyes for her daughters, and three long walks each week for firewood. When she had to buy, seven bundles cost K4,500 a month.
Last year Kukula Solar donated a Chitetezo Mbaula to her household as part of its clean cooking outreach. The stove uses one small opening, holds heat, and burns maize stalks as well as wood.
Now Memory collects wood once a week. She uses about 44% less firewood and sees about 60% less smoke, so her monthly fuel cost fell to K2,500. She cooks outside, the coughing stopped, and the afternoons she saved go to her groundnut plot. Because the stove came free, the savings started immediately, and the money stays for school fees and food.
