Global Fund for Children stands in solidarity with community-based organizations in Ukraine and neighboring countries that are supporting children and families affected by the Russian invasion. In response to the war's devastating impact on children and families, GFC has disbursed over $3.1 million in emergency grants to 76 grassroots organizations in Ukraine and neighboring countries, including Moldova and Poland.
In 2024, the number of child casualties rose significantly compared to the previous year, with over 2,500 children reported killed or injured since February 2022-though the real figures are likely higher. Ongoing damage to energy infrastructure has led to widespread power shortages, disrupting education, healthcare, heating, and water access. Local organizations remain essential in meeting urgent community needs and supporting families on the ground.
Beyond emergency relief, GFC prioritizes long-term investment in local leadership. Our support enables community-based organizations to strengthen their operations, adapt to new challenges, and provide inclusive, trauma-informed care. Supported by GFC, partners are delivering urgent needs, ranging from shelter and basic needs to education, mental health services, and protection from violence.
Despite extremely challenging conditions, our partners are doing everything they can to protect children and young people-both in terms of humanitarian support and mental well-being. Without continued support, the progress achieved over the past two years is at risk of stalling-or even reversing. What these organizations need now is not just emergency aid, but sustained investment to strengthen their resilience, adapt their structures, and continue serving their communities effectively.
