Final Update: Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan

Due to the ongoing conflict in Syria, more than 5.6 million Syrians have fled into neighboring countries, including Jordan. As of December 2018, UNHCR had recorded more than 671,000 Syrian refugees residing in Jordan, with approximately 40,000 living in Azraq Refugee Camp.

International Medical Corps has been operating as an essential healthcare partner in Azraq since 2014, when the refugee camp opened, and one year later our teams began supporting Azraq Hospital. Within the hospital, we provide comprehensive healthcare services in reproductive health, pediatrics, emergency care, radiology and diagnostics, and more. In one year alone, our medical teams provided more than 83,000 medical consultations at the hospital for all conditions, both inpatient and outpatient.

Below are first-hand accounts shared over the project of our lifesaving work at the hospital from two new mothers, Dhiba and Khatoon:

Dhiba was nine months pregnant when she and her family crossed the Syria-Jordan border on their way to the Azraq Refugee Camp. The truck shook so wildly that Dhiba was afraid she might lose her baby. A few days after arriving in the camp, she went into labor and was taken to International Medical Corps’ 24-hour hospital, and, only a few minutes later, she welcomed her baby girl, Amnah. “If there had been no clinic,” Dhiba said, “it would have been a very serious situation.”

It took just 15 minutes for Khatoon to arrive at International Medical Corps’ hospital by ambulance where the obstetrician immediately determined that she would need a C-section to deliver her expected twins safely. As the only surgical delivery room was already in use, doctors raced to prepare an auxiliary room reserved for emergencies like this, fitting it with the necessary instruments and disinfecting the equipment. The operation lasted just 30 minutes and Khatoon gave birth to two beautiful and healthy baby boys. Of her experience Khatoon said, “I feel very happy to have healthy babies and can’t appreciate your efforts enough. How blessed I am to be surrounded by all of you who made this happen.”

Within the maternity ward at Azraq Hospital, we have delivered more than 1,500 babies, including Ghazal. She was officially recorded as the 1,000th baby born there, on November 1, 2016. It was at Azraq Camp Hospital where Nadia found out that she was pregnant with her 6th child, Ghazal. “Thanks to the support we received here, my wife’s pregnancy was very smooth,” Nadia’s husband said gratefully. “The community health volunteers visited us throughout and referred us to the clinic for antenatal care.”
