Lawyers for Human Rights has been providing free legal services to individuals and communities in South Africa for 45 years. Celebrate our 45 year anniversary with us by donating so we can continue to provide access to justice with legal advice and representation, and the development of young Black lawyers from the communities we serve. Support LHR to bridge the gap between rights and reality, to Make Rights Real.
Access to justice is a human right as well as the key to protecting all other rights. Unfortunately, the majority of people living in South Africa cannot afford legal representation to protect their rights. Without actual access to justice, having human rights is an empty promise. Because access to justice is largely dependent on the individual's ability to afford legal fees, the Constitution becomes meaningful only to the rich. Human rights are not a reality for many living in South Africa.
Lawyers for Human Rights is an independent human rights organisation with a 45-year track record of human rights activism and public interest litigation in South Africa. We use the law as a positive instrument for change, by providing free legal services to vulnerable, marginalised, and indigent individuals and communities. We help South Africans and foreign nationals whose constitutional rights have been infringed, and reach approximately 15 000 individuals annually.
Lawyers for Human Rights aims to strengthen democracy in South African society. Our outreach and training of grassroots paralegals and workers ensure sustainability, and widened our impact in communities all over the country. We dream of South Africa in which even the poorest people have access to to justice, and have their human rights respected and protected.
